At 11 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 26 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 92 per cent.

Tropical Cyclone Haima will move across the northern part of Luzon and enter the South China Sea on Thursday morning. The Observatory will issue Standby Signal, No. 1 by then. According to the present forecast track, Haima will edge closer to the coast of Guangdong on Friday, and may skirt within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong, posing a threat to the territory. The weather is expected to deteriorate significantly on Friday. There will be frequent squalls and heavy rain. Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public should remain vigilant and take all precautions as early as possible.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon and the outer southerly airstream of Tropical Cyclone Sarika converged near the Pearl River Estuary today, and brought heavy showers to the region. Locally, it was cloudy with showers and thunderstorms. Showers were heavy in the afternoon. More than 100 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places, and rainfall even exceeded 200 millimetres over the urban areas, Sha Tin and Tai Po. Tropical Cyclone Haima will move across the northern part of Luzon and enter the South China Sea tomorrow morning. Under the influence of its outer subsiding air, the weather will improve shortly over the coast of Guangdong tomorrow.

At 11 p.m., Super Typhoon Haima was centred about 370 kilometres north-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour across the northern part of Luzon. Besides, Sarika gradually weakened from a severe tropical storm into a tropical depression today. At 11 p.m., Sarika was centred about 110 kilometres southwest of Nanning. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour into inland Guangxi.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Thursday, 20 Oct 2016)

Cloudy with one or two showers. Sunny periods during the day. Temperatures will range between 25 and 31 degrees. Moderate to fresh east to northeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore later. There will be swells later.

Outlook : Frequent heavy rain with squalls on Friday. Seas will be rough with swells. Rain will ease off later on Saturday.

    Warnings:
    Storm force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Gale force winds in south of Hong Kong. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Super Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 210 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.6 degrees north, 122.3 degrees east, it is forecast to move west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour across the northern part of Luzon Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Sarika with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.1 degrees north, 107.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northwest at about 10 kilometres per hour into inland Guangxi.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 191200 UTC, Super Typhoon Haima (1622) with central pressure 910 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one seven point three degrees north (17.3 N) one two three point two degrees east (123.2 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 15 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 115 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 190900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point eight degrees north (21.8 N) one zero seven point nine degrees east (107.9 E) and is forecast to move north at about 5 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
