    Weather Situation:
    At 9 a.m., Severe Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 175 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 18.3 degrees north, 120.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 10 a.m., Severe Typhoon Haima was estimated to be about 730 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.5 degrees north 119.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Haima will move across the northern part of the South China Sea today. It will still be at a distance from Hong Kong during the day. However, as Haima moves progressively towards the coast of Guangdong, local winds will strengthen gradually overnight and there will also be swells. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No.3 later today.

    According to the present forecast track, Haima will edge close to the coast of Guangdong tomorrow and may be rather close to Hong Kong. Local weather will then deteriorate significantly with frequent squalls and heavy rain. Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public should remain vigilant and take all precautions as early as possible.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    4. Since there will be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    5. Engineers, architects and contractors should make sure that scaffoldings, hoardings and other temporary structures are secured.

    6. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    7. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 200000 UTC, Severe Typhoon Haima (1622) with central pressure 942 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one eight point five degrees north (18.5 N) one two zero point one degrees east (120.1 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 90 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 190900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point eight degrees north (21.8 N) one zero seven point nine degrees east (107.9 E) and is forecast to move north at about 5 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (19 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
