    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

    Weather Situation:
    At 1 p.m., Severe Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 165 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.6 degrees north, 119.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    North to northeast force 4 to 5, force 6 to 7 later.
    A few showers with some haze.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Northeast force 6 to 7, becoming east to southeast up to force 12 in south later.

    Rough seas, becoming phenomenal later.

    Shanwei:
    Northeast force 6 to 7, becoming cyclonic force 12 later.

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 3 p.m., Severe Typhoon Haima was estimated to be about 600 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 18.9 degrees north 118.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 200600 UTC, Severe Typhoon Haima (1622) with central pressure 942 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one eight point nine degrees north (18.9 N) one one eight point nine degrees east (118.9 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 90 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over western semicircle, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 100 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over western semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Forecast position and intensity at 210600 UTC
    Two two point seven degrees north (22.7 N)
    One one four point nine degrees east (114.9 E)
    Maximum winds 75 knots.

    Two seven point eight degrees north (27.8 N)

    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Sarika (1621) has weakened into a Tropical Depression with central pressure 998 hectopascals. At 190900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point eight degrees north (21.8 N) one zero seven point nine degrees east (107.9 E) and is forecast to move north at about 5 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (19 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

Note

      

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
