During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.6. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Widespread heavy rain may affect Hong Kong in a couple of hours. Members of the public should be on the alert.

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Storm force winds in Nan'ao. Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 a.m., Typhoon Haima with maximum sustained winds of about 145 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.4 degrees north, 115.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northwest quarter.

    At 11 a.m., Typhoon Haima was centred about 130 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 22.4 degrees north 115.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of eastern Guangdong.

    According to the present forecast track, Haima will be closest to Hong Kong around noon, skirting about 100 km to the east of the territory. The No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal is expected to remain in force most of the time during the day.

    The western part of Haima's eye wall is edging closer to Hong Kong and local winds will still strengthen. Winds over Hong Kong will turn to the southwest this afternoon when Haima makes landfall. Places which have been sheltered before will become more exposed to the high winds. The rainbands of Haima are bringing squalls and heavy rain to the territory. Seas are rough and there are swells. Members of the public should stay on high alert, stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Peng Chau and Green Island were 73, 64 and 57 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 93, 96 and 69 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

    2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    4. Owners of neon signs are reminded that they should now arrange for the electricity supply to their signs to be cut off.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 210000 UTC, Typhoon Haima (1622) with central pressure 955 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two one point seven degrees north (21.7 N) one one five point seven degrees east (115.7 E) and is forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 12 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Typhoon Haima (1622) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 955 hectopascals. At 201800 UTC, it was centred within 30 nautical miles of two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N) one one six point five degrees east (116.5 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 14 knots for the next 12 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 300 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 240 nautical miles elsewhere.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (20 Oct 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
