Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 14:45 HKT 21/Oct/2016

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southwest Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southwest quarter.

At 3 p.m., Typhoon Haima was centred about 130 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong (near 23.1 degrees north 115.1 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

Winds over Hong Kong are turning to the southwest gradually. Places which have been sheltered before will become more exposed to high winds. Gales will affect the territory for some time. The No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal is expected to remain in force for some time.

According to the present forecast track, Haima will begin to move away from Hong Kong gradually. Local winds will subside progressively later today. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 to replace the No. 8 signal around dusk.

The rainbands of Haima are bringing squalls and heavy rain to the territory. Seas are rough and there are swells. Members of the public should stay on high alert, stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Star Ferry and Lau Fau Shan were 82, 62 and 64 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 111, 80 and 91 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 8 Signal)

1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

4. Owners of neon signs are reminded that they should now arrange for the electricity supply to their signs to be cut off.

5. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for the information.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
