Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 17:25 HKT 21/Oct/2016

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 was issued at 5:20 p.m.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

Typhoon Haima has weakened into a severe tropical storm.

At 5 p.m., Haima was estimated to be about 160 kilometres north-northeast of Hong Kong (near 23.6 degrees north 114.9 degrees east) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

Although local winds are subsiding, occasional gales are still affecting offshore waters and high grounds at first. Seas are rough and there are swells. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.

With Haima continuing to weaken and move away from Hong Kong, local winds will subside further overnight. When the threat posed by Haima to Hong Kong diminishes, the Observatory will cancel all tropical cyclone warning signals overnight.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Green Island and Tate's Cairn were 89, 65 and 63 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 101, 83 and 84 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Since seas are rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

2. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

3. You should not relax taking precautions as strong winds are still blowing and unsecured objects may be blown down. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

4. It is not yet safe for small craft and fishing vessels to leave typhoon shelters.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
