Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon is affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong and bringing rainy weather to the region. Locally, a few millimetres of rainfall were recorded over most parts of the territory in the afternoon.

Tropical Storm Tokage has intensified into a severe tropical storm. At noon, Tokage was centred about 790 kilometres south of Dongsha. It is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Cloudy with occasional rain. It will be cool. Temperatures in the urban areas will fall to around 14 degrees tonight, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, strong offshore and on high ground.

Outlook : Rather cool tomorrow morning. Becoming bright during the day. Mainly fine on Monday.

Weather Situation:
An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

Tropical Storm Tokage has intensified into a severe tropical storm. At noon, Tokage with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.6 degrees north, 118.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 260600 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Tokage (1625) with central pressure 984 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one three point eight degrees north (13.8 N) one one seven point eight degrees east (117.8 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
