Pressure over inland Guangdong is rising. An intense northeast monsoon is expected to reach the coastal areas overnight.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy. Sunny intervals tomorrow. Cooler in the morning and at night. Temperatures will range between 18 and 22 degrees. Light winds, strengthening from the north overnight.

Outlook : Temperatures falling progressively in the following couple of days. The minimum temperature will be about 13 degrees in the urban areas on Friday, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 130000 UTC, the tropical depression over Vietnam with central pressure 1004 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one zero point nine degrees north (10.9 N) one zero seven point nine degrees east (107.9 E) and is forecast to move west-southwest slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over northeast quadrant, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.

    No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (12 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
