Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A strong northeast monsoon is bringing cooler weather to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, a few millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places this morning.

Typhoon Nock-ten has intensified into a severe typhoon. At 8 a.m., Nock-ten was centred about 880 kilometres east of Manila. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the central part of the Philippines.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy with one or two rain patches. Cooler in the morning. The maximum temperature will be about 20 degrees during the day. Fresh easterly winds, strong offshore.

Outlook : Windy on Christmas Day. Mild on Boxing Day. Becoming cold in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 9 a.m., Severe Typhoon Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 175 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.1 degrees north, 128.8 degrees east, it is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 16 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the central part of the Philippines.

    Moderate to rough seas.

Yesterday's (23 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
