Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Pressure is rising over central China. An intense replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach southern China at night.

At 8 a.m., Severe Typhoon Nock-ten was centred about 130 kilometres south-southeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the central part of the Philippines.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine apart from some haze. The maximum temperature will be around 24 degrees. Moderate easterly winds, becoming fresh northerlies tonight.

Outlook : Becoming cold midweek this week. Temperatures falling to around 12 degrees in the urban areas on Wednesday and Thursday, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the south China coastal waters at night.

    At 9 a.m., Severe Typhoon Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 165 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.5 degrees north, 121.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour across the central part of the Philippines.

     THE NORTHEAST MONSOON IS AFFECTING THE SOUTH
     CHINA COASTAL AREAS.  PRESSURE IS RISING OVER
     CENTRAL CHINA.  AN INTENSE REPLENISHMENT OF THE
     NORTHEAST MONSOON IS EXPECTED TO REACH SOUTHERN
     CHINA AT NIGHT.
     AT 9 A.M., SEVERE TYPHOON NOCK-TEN WAS CENTRED
     NEAR 13.5 DEGREES NORTH, 121.2 DEGREES EAST.  IT
     IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT
     ABOUT 12 KNOTS ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE
     PHILIPPINES.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 260000 UTC, Severe Typhoon Nock-ten (1626) with central pressure 950 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one three point five degrees north (13.5 N) one two one point five degrees east (121.5 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 85 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 270000 UTC
    One four point seven degrees north (14.7 N)
    One one seven point one degrees east (117.1 E)
    Maximum winds 55 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (25 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
