Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Pressure is rising over the northern part of southern China. An intense replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the south China coastal areas tonight.

Severe Typhoon Nock-ten has weakened into a typhoon. At 1 p.m., Nock-ten was centred about 110 kilometres southwest of Manila. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour entering the central part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Mainly fine apart from some haze. Moderate easterly winds. Winds will strengthen from the north tonight and it will become cloudy.

Outlook : Temperatures will fall appreciably in the next couple of days. The minimum temperature will be about 12 degrees in the urban areas on Wednesday and Thursday, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense replenishment of the northeast monsoon is expected to reach the south China coastal waters tonight.

    At noon, Severe Typhoon Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.7 degrees north, 120.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 22 kilometres per hour entering the central part of the South China Sea.

II.  SYNOPSIS OF THE WEATHER SITUATION :
     THE NORTHEAST MONSOON IS AFFECTING THE SOUTH
     CHINA COASTAL AREAS.  PRESSURE IS RISING OVER
     CENTRAL CHINA.  AN INTENSE REPLENISHMENT OF THE
     NORTHEAST MONSOON IS EXPECTED TO REACH SOUTHERN
     CHINA AT NIGHT.
     AT 9 A.M., SEVERE TYPHOON NOCK-TEN WAS CENTRED
     NEAR 13.5 DEGREES NORTH, 121.2 DEGREES EAST.  IT
     IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT
     ABOUT 12 KNOTS ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE
     PHILIPPINES.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Severe Typhoon Nock-ten (1626) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 950 hectopascals. At 260300 UTC, it was centred within 30 nautical miles of one three point six degrees north (13.6 N) one two zero point six degrees east (120.6 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 180 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 150 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 270300 UTC
    One four point eight degrees north (14.8 N)
    One one six point seven degrees east (116.7 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (25 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
