At 9 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 23 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 71 per cent.

A cold front will cross the coastal areas of Guangdong tonight. Under the influence of the associated intense northeast monsoon, temperatures in Hong Kong will fall appreciably tomorrow and it will become cold on Wednesday morning. Winds will be rather strong in the coming couple of days.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A cold front is moving across the coastal areas of Guangdong. The associated intense northeast monsoon is affecting the region gradually.

At 8 p.m., Typhoon Nock-ten was centred about 240 kilometres west of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Turning cloudy with some haze overnight. It will become appreciably cooler. The minimum temperature will be about 17 degrees tomorrow morning. Mainly fine and dry during the day with a maximum temperature of around 20 degrees. Temperatures will fall further to about 15 degrees tomorrow night. Moderate northerly winds, strengthening gradually.

Outlook : Cold on Wednesday morning. Still rather cool in the following couple of days.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

    Weather Situation:
    The intense northeast monsoon associated with a cold front is affecting the south China coastal waters gradually.

    At 7 p.m., Typhoon Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 130 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 14.2 degrees north, 119.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

    Some haze at first.
    Rough seas.

     A COLD FRONT FORMED OVER NORTHERN GUANGDONG IN
     THE AFTERNOON AND IS MOVING SOUTH GRADUALLY. THE
     ASSOCIATED INTENSE NORTHEAST MONSOON WILL REACH
     THE COASTAL AREAS OF GUANGDONG TONIGHT.
     AT 4 P.M., TYPHOON NOCK-TEN WAS CENTRED NEAR
     14.2 DEGREES NORTH, 119.4 DEGREES EAST.  IT IS
     FORECAST TO MOVE WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 11

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 261200 UTC, Typhoon Nock-ten (1626) with central pressure 965 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of one four point three degrees north (14.3 N) one one eight point five degrees east (118.5 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 70 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 150 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 271200 UTC
    One four point nine degrees north (14.9 N)
    One one five point six degrees east (115.6 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (25 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
