Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong.

At 2 a.m., Typhoon Nock-ten was centred about 380 kilometres west of Manila. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy periods at first. It will become appreciably cooler. The minimum temperature will be about 17 degrees in the morning. Mainly fine and dry during the day with a maximum temperature of around 20 degrees. Temperatures will fall further to about 15 degrees at night. Fresh to strong northerly winds.

Outlook : Cold on Wednesday morning. Still rather cool in the following couple of days.

    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 3 a.m., Typhoon Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 120 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 14.7 degrees north, 117.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 261800 UTC, Typhoon Nock-ten (1626) with central pressure 970 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one four point six degrees north (14.6 N) one one seven point two degrees east (117.2 E) and is forecast to move west at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 65 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 271800 UTC
    One four point one degrees north (14.1 N)
    One one four point six degrees east (114.6 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
