Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong.

Besides, Typhoon Nock-ten has weakened into a severe tropical storm. At 10 a.m., Nock-ten was centred about 540 kilometres north-northeast of Nansha Dao. It is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and weaken gradually.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine and dry. It will become appreciably cooler. Temperatures will fall to about 15 degrees at night. Fresh to strong northerly winds.

Outlook : Cold tomorrow morning. Still rather cool in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    Typhoon Nock-ten has weakened into a severe tropical storm. At 9 a.m., Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 14.9 degrees north, 116.2 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and weaken gradually.

     AN INTENSE NORTHEAST MONSOON IS AFFECTING THE
     COASTAL AREAS OF GUANGDONG.
     TYPHOON NOCK-TEN HAS WEAKENED INTO A SEVERE
     TROPICAL STORM. AT 9 A.M., NOCK-TEN WAS CENTRED
     NEAR 14.9 DEGREES NORTH, 116.2 DEGREES EAST.  IT
     IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST OR WEST-SOUTHWEST AT
     ABOUT 8 KNOTS ACROSS THE CENTRAL PART OF THE
     SOUTH CHINA SEA AND WEAKEN GRADUALLY.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Nock-ten (1626) has weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 975 hectopascals. At 270000 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of one four point nine degrees north (14.9 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles over northern semicircle, 90 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 280000 UTC
    One three point four degrees north (13.4 N)
    One one three point seven degrees east (113.7 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 290000 UTC
    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
