Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The winter monsoon is bringing cold and dry weather to southern China.

At 8 p.m., Tropical Storm Nock-ten was centred about 480 kilometres north-northeast of Nansha Dao. It is forecast to move southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and weaken gradually.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Dry at first. Becoming cloudy. Cold tomorrow morning with a minimum temperature of around 12 degrees in the urban areas, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories. Bright periods during the day with a maximum temperature of about 15 degrees. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, strong offshore and on high ground.

Outlook : Still rather cool in the following couple of days.

    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 14.6 degrees north, 115.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move southwest at about 14 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 271200 UTC, Tropical Storm Nock-ten (1626) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one four point four degrees north (14.4 N) one one five point five degrees east (115.5 E) and is forecast to move southwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 281200 UTC
    Dissipated over sea.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
