Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The winter monsoon is bringing cold weather to southern China. Locally, the minimum temperature recorded at the Observatory was 11.5 degrees this morning, the lowest recorded so far this winter.

At 8 a.m., Tropical Depression Nock-ten was centred about 320 kilometres north-northwest of Nansha Dao. It is forecast to move southwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and dissipate gradually.

Weather forecast for today

Cold in the morning. Dry with sunny periods during the day. The maximum temperature will be about 15 degrees. Moderate to fresh northerly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Still rather cool in the next couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    An intense northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 9 a.m., Tropical Depression Nock-ten with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 13.0 degrees north, 113.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move southwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the central part of the South China Sea and dissipate gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 280000 UTC, Tropical Depression Nock-ten (1626) has weakened into an area of low pressure.

    No further warnings on this area of low pressure will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless re-intensification takes place.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (27 Dec 2016) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2015, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
