Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The northeast monsoon brought slightly cooler weather to the coastal areas of Guangdong yesterday. Locally, it was mainly cloudy. There were sunny intervals during the day. Temperatures over the territory in the afternoon were generally three to four degrees lower than those of the day before. The northeast monsoon will continue to affect Guangdong in the next couple of days. It will be slightly cooler over the region.

At 11 p.m. last night, the tropical depression over the southern part of the Philippines was centred about 580 kilometres south-southeast of Manila. It is forecast to move southwest or west-southwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the Philippines.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Mainly cloudy. The minimum temperature in the morning will be about 18 degrees in the urban areas, and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories. Sunny periods during the day with a maximum temperature of around 21 degrees. Moderate to fresh easterly winds, occasionally strong offshore.

Outlook : Windier and slightly cooler on Wednesday. Even cooler with a few rain patches in the latter part of this week.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 090900 UTC, the tropical depression over the southern part of the Philippines with central pressure 1002 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of nine point nine degrees north (9.9 N) one two three point nine degrees east (123.9 E) and is forecast to move west or west-southwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 60 nautical miles.

No further warnings on this Tropical Depression will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
