At 11 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 25 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 97 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 1. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

The area of thundery showers associated with a trough of low pressure is affecting the vicinity of Pearl River Estuary. Heavy showers and thunderstorms may affect Hong Kong in the next couple of hours. Members of the public should be on the alert.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 1:15 p.m. today. A few thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southerly airstream is bringing thundery showers to the south China coast. Locally, more than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places in the past one to two hours, and rainfall even exceeded 40 millimetres over Kwai Tsing, Kowloon City and Sha Tin. Besides, the trough of low pressure over the northern part of southern China is moving southwards gradually and is expected to edge closer to the coastal areas later today.

Weather forecast for today

Cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times. Moderate southerly winds, fresh at times.

Outlook : Heavy showers at first tomorrow. Weather improving later. Sunny periods in the following couple of days.

    A southerly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters. Besides, the trough of low pressure over the northern part of southern China is moving southwards gradually and is expected to edge closer to the south China coastal waters later today.

Yesterday's (14 May 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
