    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong.

    Weather Situation:
    At 3 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 19.4 degrees north, 115.8 degrees east, it is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour crossing the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 a.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was estimated to be about 320 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 19.7 degrees north 115.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea.

    Merbok took on a more northwesterly track and continued to edge closer to the coast of Guangdong in the small hours today. According to the latest forecast track, Merbok is expected to make landfall within 100 kilometres of Hong Kong around midnight tomorrow.

    Local winds will strengthen gradually during the day. The Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 in the morning. As Merbok edges closer, local weather will be unsettled with occasional squally showers today. Showers will be heavy with strengthening winds tonight. As there will be sea swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

    2. People living in wooden huts and in low-lying areas should take necessary precautions against strong winds and flooding.

    3. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    4. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    5. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    6. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 111800 UTC, Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one nine point two degrees north (19.2 N) one one five point eight degrees east (115.8 E) and is forecast to move north or north-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Two two point seven degrees north (22.7 N)
    One one four point four degrees east (114.4 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (11 Jun 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
