    Warnings:

    Weather Situation:
    At noon, Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.7 degrees north, 115.0 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    East force 5 to 6, becoming cyclonic force 7 to 8, becoming southwest force 7 to 8 tomorrow.
    Occasional squally showers and thunderstorms, heavy at times later.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At noon, Tropical Storm Merbok was estimated to be about 200 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.7 degrees north 115.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    According to the current forecast track, Merbok is expected to make landfall within 100 kilometers of Hong Kong around midnight tonight. Local winds will strengthen significantly with heavy showers tonight.

    Since the region of gale wind associated with Merbok is rather small, gale force wind will affect Hong Kong only when Merbok comes very close to the Pearl River Estuary. Depending on Merbok's movement and intensity changes, the Observatory will consider later in the afternoon the need to issue the Gale or Storm Signal No. 8.

    As the sea will be rough and there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Cheung Chau Beach and Waglan Island were both 53 kilometres per hour.

    1. You are advised not to delay in taking all precautions to protect your home or property. Make sure now that all loose objects are secure. Porch furniture, flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors. Check again and make sure all windows and doors can be securely locked.

    2. Engineers, architects and contractors are again reminded that all scaffoldings, hoardings and temporary buildings should be secured.

    3. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

    4. Fishing vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Check again that all deck fittings are firmly fastened. If available, heavy anchors should be prepared and used in addition to regular anchors.

    5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 120300 UTC, Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point six degrees north (20.6 N) one one five point zero degrees east (115.0 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Two three point nine degrees north (23.9 N)
    One one four point five degrees east (114.5 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
