Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 15:45 HKT 12/Jun/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was estimated to be about 100 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 21.5 degrees north 114.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

Merbok continued to edge closer to the Pearl River Estuary in the past few hours. According to the current forecast track, Merbok is expected to make landfall within 50 kilometers of Hong Kong around midnight tonight. Although the region of gale wind associated with Merbok is rather small and mainly located to the east and south of its centre, gale force wind is expected to affect parts of the territory when the centre of Merbok comes very close tonight.

In the past few hours, local winds were strengthening with occasional gales beginning to affect the offshore areas. The Number 8 Gale or Storm Signal will be issued at or before 5:30 p.m.

As the sea will be rough and there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Green Island and Sai Kung were 70, 53 and 44 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. For safety reasons, it is suggested that all outdoor activities be cancelled.

2. People should avoid walking or working in areas exposed to gales and squalls. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

3. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

4. Engineers, architects and contractors are again reminded that all scaffoldings, hoardings and temporary buildings should be secured.

5. Small craft owners should now complete arrangements for the safety of their boats.

6. Fishing vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Check again that all deck fittings are firmly fastened. If available, heavy anchors should be prepared and used in addition to regular anchors.

7. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

Forecast position and intensity at 130600 UTC
Two four point eight degrees north (24.8 N)
One one four point nine degrees east (114.9 E)
Maximum winds 25 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 140600 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
