    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Strong winds in Nan'ao and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 85 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.9 degrees north, 114.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Hong Kong.

    Cyclonic force 9, becoming southwest force 7 to 8.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northeast quarter.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Merbok was centred about 50 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 21.9 degrees north 114.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour in the general direction of Hong Kong.

    Merbok is expected to make landfall in the vicinity of Hong Kong in the next few hours, bringing gales and heavy rain to parts of the territory. Local wind directions will change significantly when Merbok passes over Hong Kong. Areas which were previously sheltered may become exposed. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

    The Number 8 Gale or Storm Signal is expected to remain in force tonight.

    As the sea will be very rough and there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Cheung Chau and Sha Chau were 87, 53 and 51 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 107, 69 and 66 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

    2. Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.

    3. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    4. Owners of neon signs are reminded that they should now arrange for the electricity supply to their signs to be cut off.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 120900 UTC, Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) with central pressure 988 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two one point six degrees north (21.6 N) one one four point five degrees east (114.5 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 45 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    One one five point one degrees east (115.1 E)
    Maximum winds 25 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
