Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Tropical Storm Merbok crossed the northern part of the South China Sea today and intensified into a severe tropical storm at night. Locally, there were squally showers and winds strengthened during the day. Merbok is expected to cross inland Guangdong and will dissipate gradually today and tomorrow. Under the influence of its remnants, there will still be showers over the region.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Tuesday, 13 Jun 2017)

Strong to gale northwesterly winds. Becoming southwesterlies. Cloudy with heavy squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Seas will be very rough with swells. Temperatures will range between 25 and 30 degrees. Winds will moderate gradually and showers will ease off later.

Outlook : There will still be showers in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    At 11 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Merbok with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 22.5 degrees north, 114.4 degrees east, it is forecast to move north at about 20 kilometres per hour crossing Mirs Bay.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northwest quarter.

    At 11 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Merbok was centred about 30 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.5 degrees north 114.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move north at about 20 kilometres per hour crossing Mirs Bay.

    Merbok is expected to make landfall over the coast of Mirs Bay shortly. Local wind direction will change from northwest to southwest as Merbok makes landfall. The rainbands to the south of Merbok will bring heavy rain and squalls to Hong Kong.

    The Number 8 Gale or Storm Signal is expected to remain in force for some time during the small hours.

    As the sea will be very rough and there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Tate's Cairn and Green Island were 77, 72 and 68 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 91, 101 and 94 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

    2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    3. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    4. Owners of neon signs are reminded that they should now arrange for the electricity supply to their signs to be cut off.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Merbok (1702) has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 985 hectopascals. At 121200 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point one degrees north (22.1 N) one one four point four degrees east (114.4 E) and is forecast to move north at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 30 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 25 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 15 nautical miles elsewhere.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 60 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
