Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southerly airstream brought showers and thunderstorms to the south China coast today. Locally, it was mainly cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over many places of the New Territories, and rainfall even exceeded 40 millimetres over Tsuen Wan and North District. The southerly airstream will continue to bring showers to the coast of Guangdong in the next few days.

Besides, an area of low pressure over the western North Pacific intensified into a tropical storm progressively today, and was named Nanmadol. At 11 p.m., Nanmadol was centred about 300 kilometres east-southeast of Taibei. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the seas east of Taiwan.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Monday, 3 Jul 2017)

Mainly cloudy with occasional showers and a few thunderstorms. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Moderate southerly winds, fresh at times.

Outlook : Sunny intervals and a few showers in the following couple of days.

    A southerly airstream is bringing unsettled weather to the south China coastal waters.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Nanmadol with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 24.2 degrees north, 124.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the seas east of Taiwan.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Nanmadol (1703) has entered the area of responsibility of the Hong Kong Observatory.

    At 021200 UTC, Nanmadol (1703) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two three point six degrees north (23.6 N) one two four point six degrees east (124.6 E) and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Forecast position and intensity at 031200 UTC
    Three zero point two degrees north (30.2 N)
    One two five point one degrees east (125.1 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 041200 UTC
    Three five point six degrees north (35.6 N)
    One three five point seven degrees east (135.7 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    Become extratropical low.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (01 Jul 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
