Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southerly airstream is bringing showers and thunderstorms to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, showers were heavier over the northwestern part of the New Territories this morning. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over Yuen Long.

Tropical Storm Nanmadol has intensified into a severe tropical storm. At 10 a.m., Nanmadol was centred about 870 kilometres southwest of Nagasaki. It is forecast to move north-northeast at about 30 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea in the general direction of Japan.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. Showers will be heavy at times at first. Moderate southerly winds, fresh at times.

Outlook : Sunny intervals and a few showers in the next couple of days.

At 9 a.m., Nanmadol with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 26.4 degrees north, 124.3 degrees east, it is forecast to move north-northeast at about 30 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea in the general direction of Japan.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Nanmadol (1703) has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 984 hectopascals. At 030000 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two six point two degrees north (26.2 N) one two four point three degrees east (124.3 E) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    One two nine point three degrees east (129.3 E)
    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
