Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

A southerly airstream continues to bring showers and thunderstorms to the coastal areas of Guangdong. Locally, more than 20 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over parts of the New Territories in the afternoon.

At 4 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Nanmadol was centred about 640 kilometres southwest of Nagasaki. It is forecast to move north-northeast at about 38 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea towards Japan.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with occasional showers. Isolated thunderstorms at first. Showers will ease off with sunny intervals later tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 27 and 31 degrees. Moderate southerly winds.

Outlook : A few showers in the following couple of days, sunny intervals during the day.

    Weather Situation:
    A southerly airstream is bringing unsettled weather to the south China coastal waters.

    At 4 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Nanmadol with maximum sustained winds of about 105 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 28.4 degrees north, 125.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move north-northeast at about 38 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea towards Japan.

     A SOUTHERLY AIRSTREAM IS BRINGING SHOWERS AND
     THUNDERSTORMS TO THE COAST OF GUANGDONG.
     TROPICAL STORM NANMADOL HAS INTENSIFIED INTO A
     SEVERE TROPICAL STORM. AT 9 A.M., NANMADOL WAS
     CENTRED NEAR 26.4 DEGREES NORTH, 124.3 DEGREES
     EAST.  IT IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTH-NORTHEAST AT
     ABOUT 16 KNOTS ACROSS THE EAST CHINA SEA IN THE
     GENERAL DIRECTION OF JAPAN.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 030600 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Nanmadol (1703) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two seven point eight degrees north (27.8 N) one two four point nine degrees east (124.9 E) and is forecast to move north-northeast at about 20 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

    Three three point six degrees north (33.6 N)
    One three three point five degrees east (133.5 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Become extratropical low.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (02 Jul 2017) average ambient gamma radiation

0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in

radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
