Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 030900 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Nanmadol (1703) with central pressure 980 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two eight point six degrees north (28.6 N) one two five point five degrees east (125.5 E) and is forecast to move northeast or north-northeast at about 24 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 55 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles over eastern semicircle, 120 nautical miles elsewhere.

No further warnings on this Severe Tropical Storm will be issued by the Hong Kong Observatory unless it re-enters the Hong Kong area of responsibility.

Forecast position and intensity at 040900 UTC
Three four point zero degrees north (34.0 N)
One three five point three degrees east (135.3 E)
Maximum winds 40 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 050900 UTC
Become extratropical low.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
