At midnight at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 88 per cent.

The subtropical ridge is covering southeastern China, while Tropical Cyclone Talas over the central part of the South China Sea is bringing unsettled weather to the region. Talas is expected to move towards the southern part of Hainan Island and then into Beibu Wan on Sunday. It will keep at a distance of more than 500 kilometres from Hong Kong and will not directly affect the territory. However, under the combined effect of the subtropical ridge and Talas, it will be windier with squally showers over the northern part of the South China Sea on Sunday. People out to the sea or engaging in water sports should take note of the weather changes.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge covered southeastern China yesterday. Locally, there were sunny periods yesterday morning, and there were showers and squally thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night. More than 10 millimetres of rainfall were recorded over parts of the territory. Besides, the area of low pressure over the central part of the South China Sea intensified into a tropical depression yesterday and was named Talas. Talas is expected to move in the general direction of the southern part of Hainan Island and then into Beibu Wan today. Under the combined effect of the subtropical ridge and Talas, it will be windier with squally showers over the northern part of the South China Sea today.

At 11 p.m. last night, Tropical Depression Talas was centred about 190 kilometres east-southeast of Sanya. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the southern part of Hainan Island.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Sunday, 16 Jul 2017)

Cloudy with squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Still showery with a few thunderstorms in the following couple of days. The weather will improve gradually midweek next week.

    An easterly airstream is affecting the coastal waters of Guangdong.

    At 11 p.m., Tropical Depression Talas with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.4 degrees north, 111.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the southern part of Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 151500 UTC, Tropical Depression Talas (1704) with central pressure 996 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point four degrees north (17.4 N) one one one point zero degrees east (111.0 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    One eight point six degrees north (18.6 N)
    One zero six point nine degrees east (106.9 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (15 Jul 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
