At 7 a.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 27 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 95 per cent.

The subtropical ridge is covering southeastern China. Tropical cyclone Talas to the south of Hainan Island is expected to move west or west-northwest today, skirting the southern part of Hainan Island and then moving into Beibu Wan, gradually moving away from Hong Kong. It will not directly affect the territory. However, under the combined effect of the subtropical ridge and Talas, it will be windier with squally showers over the northern part of the South China Sea today. People out to the sea or engaging in water sports should take note of the weather changes.

Gusts reaching 70 kilometres per hour or above may affect Hong Kong.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 9:00 a.m. today. A few squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge is covering southeastern China. Under the combined effect of the subtropical ridge and Tropical Cyclone Talas, there will be squally showers over the northern part of the South China Sea.

Tropical Depression Talas has intensified into a tropical storm. At 7 a.m., Talas was centred about 80 kilometres south-southeast of Sanya. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour, skirting the southern part of Hainan Island and moving into Beibu Wan

Weather forecast for today

Mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and a few thunderstorms. Sunny intervals during the day. The maximum temperature will be about 30 degrees. Moderate to fresh east to southeasterly winds, occasionally strong offshore at first.

Outlook : Still showery with a few thunderstorms in the next couple of days. The weather will improve gradually midweek this week.

    An easterly airstream is affecting the coastal waters of Guangdong.

    Tropical Depression Talas has intensified into a Tropical Storm. At 7 a.m., Talas with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.5 degrees north, 109.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the southern part of Hainan Island.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Depression Talas (1704) has intensified into a Tropical Storm with central pressure 994 hectopascals. At 152100 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of one seven point five degrees north (17.5 N) one one zero point one degrees east (110.1 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 162100 UTC
    One eight point seven degrees north (18.7 N)
    One zero five point four degrees east (105.4 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
