Under the combined effect of the subtropical ridge and Tropical Cyclone Talas, there were thundery showers over the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong yesterday. Locally, it was mainly cloudy with showers and a few squally thunderstorms. More than 20 millimetres of rainfall were generally recorded over the territory. There will still be thundery showers over the northern part of the South China Sea and the coast of Guangdong today. As the subtropical ridge strengthens gradually, the weather will improve over the coast of Guangdong in the middle and latter parts of this week.

Talas intensified gradually from a tropical depression into a severe tropical storm yesterday. At 11 p.m. last night, Talas was centred about 280 kilometres south-southeast of Ha Noi. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across Beibu Wan towards northern Vietnam.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 161500 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Talas (1704) with central pressure 985 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one eight point five degrees north (18.5 N) one zero six point five degrees east (106.5 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 171500 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
