Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 16:45 HKT 22/Jul/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At 5 p.m., Tropical Depression Roke was estimated to be about 440 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.3 degrees north 118.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

The circulation of Roke is relatively small. According to the present forecast track, winds over the territory for the rest of today will not strengthen significantly. The chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 tonight is not high.

Whether there is a need to issue higher signal tomorrow depends on the change in intensity of Roke and its distance of closest approach from Hong Kong.

Under the influence of the outer rain bands of Roke, there will be squally showers over the coast of Guangdong tomorrow.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Some precautions against damage should be taken now, gutters and drains should be cleared of obstructions. Hinges, bolts, locks and shutters of windows and doors should be checked.

2. Since there will be swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

4. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

One one three point seven degrees east (113.7 E)
Maximum winds 30 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 240600 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
