Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 03:45 HKT 23/Jul/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 4 a.m., Tropical Storm Roke was estimated to be about 170 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.9 degrees north 115.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta.

Roke continues to move steadily towards the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta. It is expected to enter the 100 km area of the territory and the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 will persist. The Observatory will closely monitor the future movement of Roke, and consider the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signal.

As the circulation of Roke is small, winds will strengthen significantly only when Roke is rather close to Hong Kong. The public should stay on the alert and not to relax precautions.

There will be squally showers over the coast of Guangdong and there will also be swells. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. You are advised not to delay in taking all precautions to protect your home or property. Make sure now that all loose objects are secure. Porch furniture, flower pots and other objects likely to be blown away should be taken indoors. Check again and make sure all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

3. Fishing vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Check again that all deck fittings are firmly fastened. If available, heavy anchors should be prepared and used in addition to regular anchors.

4. People should avoid walking or working in areas exposed to gales and squalls. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
