Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 was issued at 1:20 p.m.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 1 p.m., Tropical Storm Roke was estimated to be about 60 kilometres northwest of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.6 degrees north 113.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across inland Guangdong and weaken gradually.

Roke is departing Hong Kong and is weakening quickly. When the threat of Roke to Hong Kong further decreases, the Observatory will cancel all the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

Under the influence of the circulation of Roke, there will still be squally showers in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary. Seas are rough and there are swells. You are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. It is not yet safe for small craft and fishing vessels to leave typhoon shelters.

2. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the

territory were as follows :

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
