Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over the coast of southeastern China.

At 6 p.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea was centred about 210 kilometres south-southwest of Dongsha. It is forecast to move slowly and linger around the northern part of the South China Sea. Besides, Severe Tropical Storm Nesat has intensified into a typhoon. At 6 p.m., Nesat was centred about 480 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine and very hot. Isolated showers tomorrow. The minimum temperature will be around 28 degrees. The maximum temperature during the day will be about 33 degrees over the urban areas, and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories. Moderate north to northeasterly winds, fresh at times.

Outlook : Very hot and hazy on Sunday with a few showers later. More showers in the following couple of days.

    Weather Situation:
    The northeast monsoon is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 6 p.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.9 degrees north, 116.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move slowly and linger over the northern part of the South China Sea. Besides, Severe Tropical Storm Nesat has intensified into a typhoon. At 6 p.m., Nesat with maximum sustained winds of about 120 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.0 degrees north, 124.6 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Nesat (1709) has entered the area of responsibility of the Hong Kong Observatory.

    Severe Tropical Storm Nesat (1709) has intensified into a Typhoon with central pressure 970 hectopascals. At 280900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point nine degrees north (20.9 N) one two four point seven degrees east (124.7 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 65 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 240 nautical miles.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 280900 UTC, Tropical Depression over the northern part of South China Sea with central pressure 996 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one nine point zero degrees north (19.0 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to move slowly for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 25 knots.

    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (27 Jul 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.07 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
