Weather Information for South China Coastal Waters

Bulletin issued at 19:31 HKT 28/Jul/2017

At 7 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 31 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 69 per cent.

The tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea will interact with Nesat to the northeast of Luzon. The tropical depression will linger around the northern part of the South China Sea on Saturday and will keep a distance from Hong Kong. It will then move northeast towards the vicinity of Taiwan Strait on Sunday. Nesat will track across Taiwan on Saturday and move inland of southeastern China on Sunday. The Observatory will monitor closely the future evolution of the two tropical cyclones.

Please be reminded that:

The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force. Very hot weather might cause adverse health effects. Members of the public should take care to avoid heatstroke.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
