Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over the coast of southeastern China.

At 5 a.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea was centred about 310 kilometres south-southwest of Dongsha. It is forecast to move slowly and linger around the northern part of the South China Sea. Meanwhile, Typhoon Nesat was centred about 330 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine. Very hot during the day with a maximum temperature of about 33 degrees in the urban areas, and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories. Isolated showers later. Moderate north to northeasterly winds, occasionally fresh offshore.

Outlook : Very hot and hazy tomorrow with a few showers later. More showers in the following couple of days.

Weather Situation:
At 5 a.m., the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea with maximum sustained winds of about 55 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 18.0 degrees north, 116.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move slowly and linger over the northern part of the South China Sea. Meanwhile, Typhoon Nesat with maximum sustained winds of about 140 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.9 degrees north, 123.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 282100 UTC, Typhoon Nesat (1709) with central pressure 955 hectopascals was centred within 30 nautical miles of two one point nine degrees north (21.9 N) one two three point four degrees east (123.4 E) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 80 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 120 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 210 nautical miles.

At 282100 UTC, the tropical depression over the northern part of South China Sea with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of one eight point zero degrees north (18.0 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to be slow moving for the next 12 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 30 knots.

Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

One one eight point five degrees east (118.5 E)
Maximum winds 35 knots.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
