Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge is bringing generally fine and very hot weather to southeastern China. Locally, temperatures in many places rose to 34 degrees or above in the afternoon.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Hato was centred about 850 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine and very hot. Some haze tomorrow with a minimum temperature of about 29 degrees. The maximum temperature during the day will be about 34 degrees in the urban areas, and a couple of degrees higher in the New Territories. Light winds.

Outlook : Becoming cloudy with showers on Tuesday. Showers will be heavy at times on Wednesday.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 4:30 p.m. on 20 August 2017

    Weather Situation:
    A southerly airstream is affecting the coastal waters of Guangdong.

    Besides, the tropical depression over the seas east of Luzon was named Hato. At 4 p.m., Tropical Depression Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 45 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 19.7 degrees north, 127.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    Southwest force 4.
    Some haze tomorrow.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao:
    Southwest force 4 to 5, becoming north force 5 later.
    Moderate seas.

    Shanwei, South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:
    Southwest force 4 to 5.
    Moderate seas.

    Outlook for the next 48 hours
    West to northwesterly winds of force 4 to 5, up to force 6 later. Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms later.

     DEGREES EAST.  IT IS FORECAST TO MOVE

Yesterday's (19 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
