Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The subtropical ridge is bringing generally fine and very hot weather to southeastern China.

At 10 a.m., Tropical Storm Hato was centred about 540 kilometres east-southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

Mainly fine and very hot apart from some haze later. Light winds.

Outlook : Becoming cloudy with showers tomorrow. Showers will be heavy at times on Wednesday.

    Warnings:
    Strong winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 9 a.m., Tropical Storm Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 20.1 degrees north, 124.7 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

    Northwest force 4 to 5.
    Some haze. Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms later.
    Moderate seas.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 210000 UTC, Tropical Storm Hato (1713) with central pressure 994 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point one degrees north (20.1 N) one two four point seven degrees east (124.7 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 8 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 90 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 220000 UTC
    Two one point three degrees north (21.3 N)
    One two zero point nine degrees east (120.9 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 230000 UTC
    Two three point zero degrees north (23.0 N)

    Maximum winds 45 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (20 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
