Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over southern China.

At 8 p.m., Tropical Storm Hato was centred about 390 kilometres southeast of Gaoxiong. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly fine and hazy tonight and tomorrow morning. Very hot with temperatures ranging between 28 and 34 degrees. Becoming cloudy with a few showers and squally thunderstorms later tomorrow. Light to moderate west to northwesterly winds.

Outlook : Cloudy to overcast with squally showers on Wednesday. Still showery in the following few days.

    Weather information for south China coastal waters issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 7:30 p.m. on 21 August 2017

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao. Strong winds in Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 20.5 degrees north, 123.5 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour towards Luzon Strait and intensify gradually.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    West to northwest force 4 to 5.
    Some haze at first, isolated squally showers and thunderstorms later.
    Moderate seas.

    Nan'ao:
    North to northwest force 5 to 6, becoming cyclonic up to force 9 later.
    Occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Rough seas, becoming very rough later.

    Shanwei:
    North to northwest force 4 to 5, becoming force 6 to 7.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate seas, becoming rough.

    South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 211200 UTC, Tropical Storm Hato (1713) with central pressure 990 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point four degrees north (20.4 N) one two three point two degrees east (123.2 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 12 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 150 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 221200 UTC
    Two two point two degrees north (22.2 N)
    One one eight point two degrees east (118.2 E)
    Maximum winds 50 knots.

    Forecast position and intensity at 231200 UTC
    Two three point eight degrees north (23.8 N)
    One one two point zero degrees east (112.0 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (20 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
