During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 7. The intensity of UV radiation was high.

The Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1 has been issued.
The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 2:45 p.m. today. Isolated thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.
The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force. Very hot weather might cause adverse health effects. Members of the public should take care to avoid heatstroke.

    Warnings:
    Hurricane force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters, Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Gale force winds in Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    At 1 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.5 degrees north, 119.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong and intensify gradually.

    West to northwest force 4 to 5, becoming cyclonic force 11 to 12.
    Frequent heavy squally showers and thunderstorms, hazy at first.

    The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea.     Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 1 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Hato was estimated to be about 540 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.5 degrees north 119.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong and intensify gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Tropical Storm Hato (1713) has intensified into a Severe Tropical Storm with central pressure 982 hectopascals. At 220300 UTC, it was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point four degrees north (20.4 N) one one nine point four degrees east (119.4 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Two two point two degrees north (22.2 N)
    One one three point six degrees east (113.6 E)
    Maximum winds 70 knots.

    Two three point six degrees north (23.6 N)

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (21 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
