At 5 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 28 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 85 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 0.3. The intensity of UV radiation was low.

Gusts reaching 90 kilometres per hour or above may continue to affect Hong Kong.

Please be reminded that:

The Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1 has been issued.
The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 6:45 p.m. today. Squally thunderstorms are expected to occur over Hong Kong.
The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force. Very hot weather might cause adverse health effects. Members of the public should take care to avoid heatstroke.

    Weather Situation:
    Severe Tropical Storm Hato has intensified into a typhoon. At 4 p.m., Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 120 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.5 degrees north, 118.1 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

    This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

    At 5 p.m., Typhoon Hato was estimated to be about 430 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.5 degrees north 117.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    Hato continued to intensify in the past few hours and edged steadily towards the coast of Guangdong. The Observatory will issue the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 shortly.

    According to the present forecast track, Hato is expected to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning (Wednesday) and may skirt within 100 kilometres south of the territory, posing a considerable threat to the territory. Unless Hato takes a track further away from Hong Kong or weakens, the Observatory will consider issuing the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal around midnight.

    The local weather is deteriorating gradually and there will be heavy squally showers. As the high tide will occur tomorrow morning, there may be serious flooding in some low-lying areas. Members of the public should take all precautions against strong winds and flooding as early as possible.

    As the sea is rough and there are swells, members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    1. All small vessels including low power vessels and fishing vessels in open sea should seek shelter as soon as possible. Please take any precautions necessary for small vessels and secure them properly with moorings.

    2. Owners of shop signs, advertisements and TV aerials which overhang public thoroughfares or which are situated on tops of buildings should make sure that the fastenings and framework of these structures are secured.

    3. If you are planning to visit Guangdong, Macau, any of the off-shore islands or remote parts of Hong Kong, you are reminded that changes in weather may affect your plans.

    4. Those who have definite duties during a tropical cyclone should now remain on call or contact their control centres from time to time.

    5. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 220600 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Hato (1713) with central pressure 975 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N) one one eight point seven degrees east (118.7 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 60 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Two two point two degrees north (22.2 N)
    One one two point nine degrees east (112.9 E)
    Maximum winds 70 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (21 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
