Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Tropical cyclone Hato intensified gradually from a tropical storm into a typhoon today. Under the influence of outer subsiding air of Hato, it was very hot and hazy with sunny periods in Hong Kong today. The maximum temperature recorded at the Observatory was 36.6 degrees, the highest ever recorded. There were also squally showers with thunderstorms in the afternoon. Hato is expected to bring heavy squally showers and swells to the coast of Guangdong tomorrow.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong (Wednesday, 23 Aug 2017)

Strong northerly winds. Winds will continue to strengthen further. Becoming east to southeasterlies in the morning. Cloudy to overcast with heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will range between 26 and 30 degrees. Seas will be rough with swells.

    At 11 p.m., Typhoon Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 120 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.7 degrees north, 116.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 11 p.m., Typhoon Hato was estimated to be about 330 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.7 degrees north 116.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    According to the present forecast track, Hato is expected to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning (Wednesday) and may skirt within 100 kilometres south of the territory, posing a considerable threat to Hong Kong. Unless Hato takes a track further away from the territory or weakens, the Observatory will consider issuing the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal before 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

    As the high tide will occur before noon tomorrow, and the storm surge induced by Hato may cause a rise in sea levels of about 1 metre or more above normal tide levels, there could be serious flooding in some low-lying areas. Members of the public should take all precautions against high winds and flooding as early as possible.

    1. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish, this applies particularly to dwellers in low-lying areas.

    2. Fishing vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Check again that all deck fittings are firmly fastened. If available, heavy anchors should be prepared and used in addition to regular anchors.

    3. People should avoid walking or working in areas exposed to gales and squalls. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

    4. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 221200 UTC, Typhoon Hato (1713) with central pressure 970 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two zero point five degrees north (20.5 N) one one seven point four degrees east (117.4 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 65 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Two two point six degrees north (22.6 N)
    One one one point three degrees east (111.3 E)
    Maximum winds 55 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (21 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
