    Weather Situation:
    At 9 a.m., Severe Typhoon Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 21.6 degrees north, 114.3 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Hurricane Signal, No. 10, was issued at 9:10 a.m.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 118 kilometres per hour or more are expected.

    At 9 a.m., Severe Typhoon Hato was centred about 80 kilometres south of Hong Kong Observatory (near 21.6 degrees north 114.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary.

    Hurricane force winds are affecting the southeastern part of Hong Kong. With Hato moving towards the western part of the Pearl River Estuary, local winds will turn gradually to the southeast, and hurricane force winds will affect other parts of the territory. Hurricane Signal No. 10 is expected to remain in force for a few hours. You are advised to remain where you are if protected and be prepared for destructive winds, possible flooding and landslip.

    A high water level of 3 metres above chart datum has already been recorded at Quarry Bay and is expected to further increase. A high water level of about 5.0 metres above chart datum is expected at Tolo Harbour around noon time. Severe sea water flooding may occur in low-lying areas. Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and low-lying areas.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn and Waglan Island were 128 and 127 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 168 and 150 kilometres per hour respectively.

    (Precautionary Announcements)

    1. Close all interior doors and make sure children are confined to the least exposed part of your home. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    2. Stay away from exposed windows and doors because glass, already under strain from wind pressure, will shatter if a flying object should hit it. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken. You should only fix broken windows and doors when there is no danger in doing so.

    3. If the eye of the typhoon passes directly over Hong Kong, there may be a temporary lull lasting from a few minutes to several hours. This will be followed by a sudden resumption of violent winds from a different direction. Remain where you are if protected and be prepared for destructive winds and the change in wind directions. Listen to broadcast warnings.

    4. Since seas are high and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    5. If you are away from home and cannot return fairly soon, find a safe place and remain there until the danger is over.

    6. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    Typhoon Hato (1713) has intensified into a Severe Typhoon with central pressure 945 hectopascals. At 230000 UTC, it was centred within 30 nautical miles of two one point five degrees north (21.5 N) one one four point five degrees east (114.5 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 90 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 240000 UTC
    Two three point four degrees north (23.4 N)
    One zero seven point five degrees east (107.5 E)
    Maximum winds 35 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (22 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
