    Hurricane force winds in Shangchuan Dao. Storm force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and south of Hong Kong. Gale force winds in Nan'ao and Shanwei.

    Weather Situation:
    At 3 p.m., Severe Typhoon Hato with maximum sustained winds of about 155 kilometres per hour near its centre was located near 22.2 degrees north, 112.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour towards inland Guangdong, and weaken gradually.

    Tropical Cyclone Warnings

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

    At 3 p.m., Severe Typhoon Hato was centred about 140 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 22.2 degrees north 112.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour into inland Guangdong, and weaken gradually.

    As Hato is moving away from Hong Kong gradually, local winds are subsiding. However, gale force winds are still affecting the southwestern part of Hong Kong, and even reaching storm force over high ground. As local winds continue its trend of weakening, the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 before dusk.

    In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Sha Chau and Chek Lap Kok were 86 and 65 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 103 and 99 kilometres per hour respectively.

    1. Although the tropical cyclone is moving away from Hong Kong, gales are expected to persist for some time. You are advised to stay indoors until winds moderate and it is safe to go out. On no account should you touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

    2. Since seas are very rough and there are swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

    3. As gales and violent squalls are still occurring in places, precautions should not yet be relaxed.

    4. Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.

    5. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

    6. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

    7. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for the information.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 230600 UTC, Severe Typhoon Hato (1713) with central pressure 950 hectopascals was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point two degrees north (22.2 N) one one two point nine degrees east (112.9 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 85 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Two three point six degrees north (23.6 N)
    One zero six point three degrees east (106.3 E)
    Maximum winds 30 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (22 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.15 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
