Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 18:45 HKT 23/Aug/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

Typhoon Hato has weakened into a severe tropical storm.

At 7 p.m., Hato was estimated to be about 280 kilometres west of Hong Kong (near 22.6 degrees north 111.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour further inland and weaken gradually.

Occasional strong winds are still affecting offshore areas of Hong Kong. Depending on the changes in local winds, the Observatory will consider cancelling all Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals.

Under the influence of the outer rainband of Hato, there will still be occasional showers.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 1 Signal)

1. Since there are still swells, you are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

2. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the latest flight information before departing for the airport.

3. Listen to radio, watch TV or browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for information on the tropical cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Warning

Severe Typhoon Hato (1713) has weakened into a Typhoon with central pressure 965 hectopascals. At 230900 UTC, it was centred within 60 nautical miles of two two point five degrees north (22.5 N) one one two point one degrees east (112.1 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 70 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
Radius of over 47 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
Radius of over 63 knot winds 30 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 240900 UTC
Two three point six degrees north (23.6 N)
One zero five point five degrees east (105.5 E)
Maximum winds 25 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 250900 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
