At 1 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 32 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 72 per cent.
During the past hour the mean UV Index recorded at King's Park was 11. The intensity of UV radiation was extreme. The public is advised to avoid prolonged exposure under the sun to prevent damage to skin and eyes.

Hot weather might cause adverse health effects. The Observatory advises the public to stay on the alert.

The Thunderstorm Warning has been issued. It will remain effective until 3:00 p.m. today. Isolated thunderstorms are expected to occur over Lantau and New Territories.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over southeastern China. Meanwhile, showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea.

At noon, Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 290 kilometres east-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Luzon.

Hot with sunny periods and a few showers. Isolated thunderstorms at first. Moderate east to southeasterly winds.

Outlook : Hot with sunny periods tomorrow. Windy with squally showers on Sunday.

    An easterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At noon, Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 15.1 degrees north, 123.6 degrees east, it is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Luzon.

    East to southeast force 4 to 5, occasionally force 6.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao and Shanwei:
    East force 5 to 6, becoming force 7 later.

    South of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao:

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 250300 UTC, Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 992 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one five point one degrees north (15.1 N) one two three point six degrees east (123.6 E) and is forecast to move west or west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    One one nine point five degrees east (119.5 E)

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (24 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.07 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
