At 7 p.m. at the Hong Kong Observatory the air temperature was 29 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity 93 per cent.

Tropical Storm Pakhar is expected to move across Luzon and enter the South China Sea tomorrow (Saturday). The Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No.1 during the day tomorrow. Owing to the terrain of Luzon, there is still uncertainty in the future track and intensity of Pakhar after crossing Luzon. It will move in a general northwest direction towards western Guangdong but will probably be further away from Hong Kong than Hato. Local winds are expected to strengthen with occasional heavy squally showers on Sunday. Members of the public are advised to take precautions against strong winds and clear storm water drains to avoid flooding. Please also complete all clearing works in relation to Hato as early as possible.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

Showers are affecting the coast of Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea.

At 4 p.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 210 kilometres east-northeast of Manila. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Luzon.

Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow

Mainly cloudy with one or two showers. Very hot with sunny periods tomorrow. Temperatures will range between 28 and 33 degrees. Moderate easterly winds, becoming northeasterlies later.

Outlook : Windy with squally showers in the following couple of days. Weather will improve midweek next week.

    Warnings:
    Gale force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei and south of Hong Kong. Strong winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters and Shangchuan Dao.

    Weather Situation:
    An easterly airstream is affecting the south China coastal waters.

    At 7 p.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 75 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 15.8 degrees north, 122.4 degrees east. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour across Luzon.

    Area forecasts for the next 24 hours

    Hong Kong Adjacent Waters:
    East force 4 to 5, becoming northeast up to force 6 later.
    Isolated squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas.

    Nan'ao, Shanwei and South of Hong Kong:
    East force 5 to 6, up to force 9 later.
    Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
    Moderate to rough seas, becoming high later.

    Shangchuan Dao:
    East force 5 to 6.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 250900 UTC, Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 992 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one five point six degrees north (15.6 N) one two two point six degrees east (122.6 E) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 10 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 40 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

    One eight point six degrees north (18.6 N)
    One one eight point two degrees east (118.2 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (24 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.07 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the
territory were as follows :

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
