Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over southeastern China. Meanwhile, showers are affecting the northern part of the South China Sea.

At 8 a.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 490 kilometres southeast of Dongsha. It is forecast to move northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour, entering the South China Sea and intensifying gradually.

Weather forecast for today

Mainly fine apart from one or two showers. Very hot during the day with a maximum temperature of around 33 degrees. Moderate easterly winds, becoming northeasterlies later.

Outlook : Windy with squally showers in the next couple of days. Weather will improve midweek next week.

Warnings:
Storm force winds in Nan'ao, Shanwei, south of Hong Kong and Shangchuan Dao. Gale force winds in Hong Kong adjacent waters.

Weather Situation:
At 9 a.m., Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 65 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 17.7 degrees north, 119.8 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour across the northern part of the South China Sea and intensify gradually.

East force 4 to 5, becoming north to northeast up to force 8 later.
Scattered squally showers and thunderstorms.
Moderate to rough seas, becoming very rough later.

Nan'ao:

Tropical Cyclone Warning

At 260000 UTC, Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 995 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of one seven point five degrees north (17.5 N) one one nine point eight degrees east (119.8 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 35 knots.

Radius of over 33 knot winds 45 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 120 nautical miles.

Two one point one degrees north (21.1 N)
One one three point six degrees east (113.6 E)
Maximum winds 60 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 280000 UTC
Two two point nine degrees north (22.9 N)

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (25 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
