Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is generally fine over the coast of southeastern China yesterday morning. Pakhar intensified from a tropical storm into a severe tropical storm yesterday. The associated cloud band covered Guangdong gradually. Locally, it was mainly fine. The weather was very hot during the day apart from one or two showers in the afternoon and at night. Pakhar will move closer to the coast of Guangdong, bringing heavy squally showers to the south China coast today and tomorrow.

Weather forecast for Hong Kong

Strong northeasterly winds, strengthening gradually. Becoming southeasterly winds. Cloudy with occasional heavy squally showers and thunderstorms. Seas will be rough with swells. Temperatures will range between 25 and 29 degrees.

Outlook : There will still be showers on Monday. Weather will improve in the following couple of days.

    At midnight, Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar with maximum sustained winds of about 90 kilometres per hour near its centre was located at 20.1 degrees north, 116.0 degrees east. It is forecast to move northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

    Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

    The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

    This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

    At 1 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar was estimated to be about 250 kilometres south-southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.3 degrees north 115.3 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 30 kilometres per hour closer to the coast of Guangdong.

    Tropical Cyclone Warning

    At 261500 UTC, Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar (1714) with central pressure 984 hectopascals was centred within 90 nautical miles of two zero point zero degrees north (20.0 N) one one six point one degrees east (116.1 E) and is forecast to move northwest at about 16 knots for the next 24 hours.

    Maximum winds near the centre are estimated to be 50 knots.

    Radius of over 33 knot winds 90 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
    Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

    Forecast position and intensity at 271500 UTC
    Two two point eight degrees north (22.8 N)
    One one zero point one degrees east (110.1 E)
    Maximum winds 40 knots.

    Dissipated over land.



    The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

    While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Yesterday's (26 Aug 2017) average ambient gamma radiation
dose rate taken outdoors in Hong Kong ranged from 0.08 to
0.14 microsievert per hour.  These are within the normal
range of fluctuation of the background radiation level in
Hong Kong (see Note). The average dose rates measured at the
radiation monitoring stations over various parts of the

    1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during
the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation
levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.

    2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of
exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity
called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert.  Protective
action may be required if there is an increase in the
ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total
additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in
a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of
5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma
dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand
times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.

    3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from
instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is
numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
