The Airport Meteorological Office is responsible for monitoring hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere that may affect the safety of aircraft operations within a designated airspace over the northern part of the South China Sea. Weather forecasters at the Airport Meteorological Office issues SIGMET information when hazardous weather and phenomena in the atmosphere such as thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, turbulence, icing occur or are expected to occur in the airspace.

Tropical Cyclone Warnings

Bulletin issued at 06:45 HKT 27/Aug/2017

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

At 7 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Pakhar was centred about 120 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.4 degrees north 113.6 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 28 kilometres per hour towards the west of the Pearl River Estuary.

In the past hour, under the influence of Pakhar's inner circulation, winds persistently reached storm force in the southern part of Hong Kong and occasionally reached hurricane force on high ground. Pakhar is skirting to the south of the territory and will land to the west of the Pearl River Estuary by noon. The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 is expected to persist at least for most of this morning. Unless Pakhar intensifies further, the chance of issuing higher signal will not be high.

Rainbands associated with Pakhar are bringing occasional heavy rain and squalls to Hong Kong. There may be flooding in low-lying areas. Seas will be very rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Tate's Cairn, Cheung Chau and Star Ferry were 131, 99 and 68 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts 170, 155 and 106 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 8 Signal)

1. Complete all precautions in your home. Lock all windows and doors, fit bars into position and insert reinforced shutters and gates if they are available. Adhesive tape fixed to large window-panes in exposed positions will reduce damage by broken glass. Storm water drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish.

2. Do not stand near windows on the exposed side of your home. Move all furniture and valuables away from these areas. Make sure you have a safe place to shelter, should windows be broken.

3. Park your car where it is least likely to be damaged.

4. Please listen to radio or watch TV for the latest weather information broadcast. You can also browse the Hong Kong Observatory's web site for the information.

Radius of over 47 knot winds 60 nautical miles.
Radius of over 2 metre waves 180 nautical miles.

Forecast position and intensity at 272100 UTC
Two three point seven degrees north (23.7 N)
One zero eight point five degrees east (108.5 E)
Maximum winds 30 knots.

Forecast position and intensity at 282100 UTC
Dissipated over land.

The Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warnings for shipping are issued about one and a half hours after the time of observation. They incorporate additional information derived from surface and upper-air data and may therefore be slightly different from the real-time satellite or radar-based positions given in the hourly bulletins for public.

While the forecast positions and track indicate the most likely future path of the tropical cyclone, they may deviate from the actual path taken by the storm.

Note
  1. From readings taken at various locations in Hong Kong during the period 1987-2016, the background ambient gamma radiation levels may vary between 0.06 and 0.30 microsievert per hour.
  2. The extent of health effects to a person as a result of exposure to radiation is expressed by a physical quantity called equivalent dose, in unit of sievert. Protective action may be required if there is an increase in the ambient gamma dose rate above background such that the total additional dose is expected to exceed 5000 microsieverts in a relatively short period of time. For example, a dose of 5000 microsieverts may be reached when the ambient gamma dose rate is 1000 microsieverts per hour (several thousand times above background) and lasts for 5 hours.
  3. The readings of ambient gamma radiation level from instrument are expressed in unit of gray, which is numerically equal to the gamma dose expressed in sievert.
